We proudly present an edition of possibly the oldest surviving Gregorian Sacramentary, which we cautiously date in the early eight or late seventh century. It is furthermore only the third known example of the Tridentinum archetype. The Sacramentarium Traiectense as we called it, or the Utrecht Sacramentary Palimpsest, is kept in the Special Collections of the Universiteit Utrecht in a codex made of reused parchment. In early 2024, the Keeper of Manuscripts at the UU, Bart Jaski, showed us multispectral scans of a palimpsest during his paleography lectures. Although he had already deciphered a few folia himself, he noted that processing and deciphering these scans would take ages, so that it might take a long time before he would finally know what was on the parchment. We took up that gauntlet, and after processing the scans, we spent nearly two years staring at vague images on our laptops and proclaiming “I think these few blobs might spell quoque?”.

Darkness Visible: N-body Simulations of Dark Matter Spikes in Hernquist Haloes

This work is the continuation of my MSc thesis, and is as far as I am aware, the first (published) proof of fully numerical dark matter spikes. These are the result of a black hole growing and pulling in large amounts of the dark matter that are present around it. It also shows that, especially if the black hole is one or two orders of magnitude in mass smaller than the dark matter halo, the analytical approximation for its density profile does not hold. The title is a reference to “Paradise Lost”, which I’m afraid is the only thing remotely connected to history.
